As part of the ongoing push to reduce costs and run every location as efficiently as possible, innovative retailers are finding ways to improve their store systems service levels while still decreasing their costs by embracing alternative maintenance approaches. And, by “getting under the hood” of same-day service needs, some leading retailers have been able to save up to 15%-20% savings on annual maintenance costs.

“It really came down to understanding why we need same day or why we need next business day,” says one IT professional at a leading specialty retail chain. “So we generated new reports to identify number of transactions per register, per hour, per day, per year, and we determined that there were probably a handful of days throughout the year that maybe every register was critical to every given store at some time … the rest of the time we were overstocked with systems in the store,” he says.

In good economic times and especially in bad ones, retailers must do all they can to sell more merchandise. Installing an all-in-on point of sale system with a small footprint and built-in peripherals such as a receipt printer and/or magnetic stripe reader is one way to get the job done. Besides getting consumers through the checkout line far faster than would be possible using separate point of sale peripherals, such systems occupy so much less valuable space than their larger counterparts—space that can be devoted to displaying inventory, placing advertising collateral or a combination of thereof.
